Matchstick Crafting

Hello everyone.

Welcome to our last post of January 2024. Where did that first month go?

This week, D and I are sharing the crafting of another family member, my wonderful husband and D's dad. His particular interest lies in working with matchsticks to create 3D models.

Some years ago, he started making trinket boxes from matchsticks using thin card as the backing to form the shapes. This hobby later developed into some of the models in the photos.

Each model took an awful lot of matches and glue and even more patience.

The vessel is a replica of the Mary Rose ship, which was commissioned as a naval flagship by Henry VIII between 1509 and 1511.

Mississippi River Boat

Medical helicopter

BAE 146

Airbus 340

Steam train and tender

And finally, a traction engine and mini fire engine.

Have a great week, everyone, and we hope the sun shines wherever you are.

Take care.

    1. Thank you Chris. I have as many as I can in a glass fronted display cabinet so that they don't get too dusty.

  5. What patience he must have. Do the matchsticks come ready to use?

    1. The match sticks can be bought in a large bag and come ready to use either to follow a ready made plan or to make up an original design. My hubby has used them for both types of models.

    1. Thank you Jules. He enjoyed making them, even though some took quite a long time. Sometimes it is the waiting for one part to dry which needs most patience but it is so worth the wait.

  8. Wow, those are amazing! Such attention to detail and artistic ability. They remind me of a toothpick ship I saw a museum once: https://www.avam.org/art/lusitania

  10. How amazing such skilled and detailed work on all the models. I particularly like the train and the Mary Rose, I remember watching the remains of the ship being carefully lifted to the surface all those years ago:)

    1. Thanks Rosie. I remember the Mary Rose being lifted from the sea bed too. It must have been a fine ship in its time.

  12. Great... I'm absolutely thrilled.
What beautiful works. So first of all: I wouldn't be able to do that. But my man - I think the two men could team up. My husband is currently starting to build the model of the “Weihe 50” glider. This will take some time... the box with the balsa, poplar and birch wood arrived today along with the construction plan...
A very warm greeting to dad and husband and happy greetings to all of you.

    1. I don't think I have that kind of patience either but the results look fantastic. I just need more space to display them properly.
