February Gold

Hello friends.

Again, the rain clouds and dull weather have been hanging around in this small corner for most of the week. Wherever you are, I hope the rain has only been an inconvenience and not a disaster. I know some areas suffer badly with flooding. I am thinking of you all.

After the beautiful colours of the amaryllis last week, I have been looking for more sunny flower colours.

I'm looking forward to seeing the first daffodils in my garden, but they are still hiding underground, having only sent up bright green shoots so far. They are obviously waiting for drier weather before they burst into flower.

"Daffodil" is the common name for bulbs in the narcissus family. They can flower from mid-February to May, so planting several varieties means enjoying them for longer. Their colours can range from pure white through lemons and yellows to apricots and oranges, with a few pinks in between. They can be early or late flowering, single or several stems and short or tall. Such a choice!

My favourite is 'February Gold' because it can flower very early. I also like 'Cheerfulness' just for the name, as well as the creamy white double flowers and scent. Do you have a favourite?

While I am waiting for the first of these bulbs to brighten the garden, I have started a small cross stitch to remind me of the sunny colours to come. I am using a random mix of yellows and oranges to make the flower heads and will link them together with some green stems.

Most of the week has again been indoors, where we have started decorating the front half of the living room. We spend a lot of time in this space, and it was impossible to remove all the furniture for the time needed to complete all the work. Instead, we are working on one wall at a time and moving furniture out of the way. So far, the plan is working, and we have a wall completed. On the far right of the photo, you can see the original colours, complete with the dado rail. Next week, we tackle the bay.

Next week, the weather is looking predictably wet again, but there may yet be a few dry spots in between. Who knows!

Whatever your plans, stay safe and well, and enjoy the week wherever you are.

  1. Beautiful! I've not yet caught sight of any daffodils so far this year. I'm sure they'll be popping up here soon though.

    1. So far so good with the decorating.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of the cheery daffodil from now and through Spring. I hope you see lots of them on your beautiful island of Jersey.

  3. Those daffodils are gorgeous! They are one of the happiest flowers. My mom always loved daffodils. They make me think of her. I always know spring isn't far away when I start to see them appear. So far, I haven't seen any popping up just yet. It's been so cold this winter and gray for the most part. We got lucky with a gorgeous sunny day yesterday, even though it was freezing. Enjoy decorating your living room. Looking forward to seeing it all finished and decorated! Have a great week!

    1. It is heartwarming to see the start of daffodil season and I am looking forward to seeing them in my own garden. I'm glad the photos brought back happy memories of your mum. Next decorating wall starts tomorrow. As my mum used to say, " it will be lovely when it's finished" 😊

  4. Daffodils are such a cheerful flower, nice to see in the garden but also in a vase.
Our local supermarket has them at £1-00 a bunch.

Your cross stitch colours look nice together.

    Happy decorating :)

    All the best Jan

    1. I think we could all do with the cheerfulness of daffodils at the moment. They are a very sunny Spring flowering bulb. £ 1.oo for a bunch of sunshine is worth every penny.
I have quite a few colours to choose from for the cross stitch and it will be a small relaxing project to work on for a week or two. Decorating had a good start this morning - old paper steamed off and cracks filled. Maybe painting tomorrow.

    1. Thank you Rosie. Daffodils are like bright smile especially with the grey days at the moment. The decorating is going well although there is inevitably some mess at the moment. I'll be glad when it is all done. Have a good week and lets hope for less rain.

  7. I love daffodils, their cheery colours always lift my mood during these long dull months. My favourites are the traditional bright yellow ones. I don't envy you with the decorating, something I hate doing, but it always looks so lovely once it's done. We really need to tackle the hall, stairs and landing this year, a job for the warmer months I think.

I will be happy when all the decorating dust and mess is finished but I am looking forward to the fresh new room. Good luck with your hall, stairs landing decorating; that's a big job!

  8. I love the little Tete a Tete daffodils. They shine out of the flower beds, and dont get knocked by the wind. I plant a few more every year!

  10. I thought those daffodil photos were from your garden. And was in awe. But, alas, you are waiting. Just like I am waiting but, at this point, I would be thrilled just to see the grass again. The snow mounds have not really gone anywhere. The temperatures just cannot get above freezing but the forecast promises a touch of spring later this week. I am sooo ready!:) I hope you have a lovely week!!

    1. Sorry, Jennifer. The first bunch of daffs were from our local shop, very cheap but perfect for brightening up indoors. The second photo was taken on a walk last year. I am just waiting for the ones in my garden to start flowering. I think they may be a little shy this year, and with the rain they will need to have little umberellas. A touch of Spring is just what we all could do with right now. Wishing you warmer days this week.

  11. The wall looks very nice and an excellent idea doing one wall at a time. Moving furniture around can be backbreaking work. Lovely to see the daffs in your photos and your embroidery is very pretty. I hope the weather treats you kindly even with the rain. Wishing you a very happy week! Denise

    1. Thank you, Denise. The decorating is going well. I have to leave most of the furniture moving to others these days but i can deal with the clearing up at the end of the day. That's my contribution.
More rain on the way but hopefully lighter showers. I'm enjoying the embroidery but changing a few things around and using more variety in the colours. Enjoy the rest of your week too.

  12. love this! 🌼✨ Your description makes daffodils sound absolutely magical, and I adore how you’ve shared your personal favourites like February Gold and Cheerfulness — the names alone bring a smile. I think I might have to try them too! 💛 My favourite? Probably a soft yellow one that smells divine — there’s something so uplifting about daffodils in early spring! 🌿💛

    1. Thank you, Melody. A small vase of daffodils on the table gives me hope that they will be arriving in my own garden very soon. The sunny flowers brighten the greyest of days.

  15. I love the one wall method. I've done that before and will do that again in the bedroom if I repaint it. We can't move the bed, it's a billion pounds. Love the yellow daffies. They make me happy when I see them. Very nice on the floss you picked. Very, very pretty.

    1. The one wall method does work well for us as we don't have to move stuff too far and at the end of the day we can have as normal evening as is possible when decorating. I can handle that! Gotta love the daffs, they are so bright and cheerful. Progress has stalled on the cross stitch version as I have too many other things going on at the moment but I will get it done, promise!
