Just Enjoying the Water

Hello Friends.

How are you all this week? Has it been a good week for you?

Back in our small corner, work continues with the pond and surrounding area. We have moved turf from other parts of the garden to the edge around the pond, and a water-loving plant has reappeared on the pond ledge. We also lifted a muddled bed of geraniums (Cranesbill) and Bergenia (Elephants Ear), sorted and replanted them. I hope everything will settle in again and grow with renewed vigour.

Some of the frog spawn have become tadpoles, so they must be happy with the pond. We still have a little further to go to finish around the edge of the pond, but the grass feels more natural than the stepping stones. Another tree may appear in the next few weeks, and the foxgloves will be replanted. Then somewhere to sit and enjoy would be nice.

This pot with some budding sticks are Hazel shoots that we put in a spare container and appear to be rooting. They will stay there for another 12 months before they line our back fence with more greenery.

After working on the garden this morning, Hubby and I took a pleasant stroll a few miles from where we live in a local nature reserve and then along a short part of one of Birmingham's canals. We enjoyed seeing some early Spring blooms and listening to the birds singing.

These flowers were gently telling me that a new season has arrived and it's time to enjoy being outdoors again.

Some early hawthorn starting to bloom.

The pale lemon flowers of this rhododendron were so delicate and pretty.

After enjoying this part of our journey, we took a short walk along the towpath where the Stratford Upon Avon Canal meets The Worcester and Birmingham Canal. When you stand at this point, Birmingham's city centre is about 6 miles away, and Worcester's is approximately 25 miles away, in the opposite direction.

We walked in the opposite direction when we last walked this towpath in 2022. I wrote about it on my old blog, but some of you might still like to see the guillotine stop lock there. It is quite a rare sight and is recognised as a Grade ll listed building. The last recorded opening was in 1959 and remains permanently raised for water traffic. The oak guillotines are at each end of the lock. The oak guillotines are at each end of the lock.

Back at home, and while the sun was still shining, my crochet was enjoying some fresh air too.

I'm nearly halfway there and still loving all its bright colours. D tells me it will fit perfectly on her bed. Hmm!!

It is Mothering Sunday tomorrow in the UK, so a big hug and thank you to all those we love and remember.

More sunny days are due this week, and I have plenty to get on with inside and out. Whatever you have planned, I hope it makes you happy.

Have a lovely week.

B x

PS: Remember to put the clocks forward tonight for the start of British Summer Time! 😊

  1. Your pond is looking so attractive and it's lovely to see all the flowers blooming and showing their beauty. Canals are so interesting, aren't they? I couldn't live on a canal boat, though, even though they look so inviting.

    1. Thank you, Janice. It is fun deciding which plants to move around that I already have and also buying new ones that will enjoy the space. I'm sure the birds will enjoy another tree to perch in. We do have a lot of canal walks quite close to us but like you I don't think living on a canal boat would be for me. it is probably quite hard work working the locks when the boat is moving from one mooring to another. Wishing you a sunny week.

    1. Thank you, Marlene. It is lovely to enjoy our outdoor spaces and share it with most of the wildlife that choose to visit. I do hope the frogs will come and visit you too. Have a lovely week.

  3. You really are getting spring- so many pops of color! It's too early to take here in the northern United States but I can see green blades fighting to come up.

    1. Progress is steady on the pond but I want to get the right plants in the right place so that there is minimal work to maintain later.

    1. I am smiling every time I go down the garden to see the pond. It is giving so much pleasure already.
The sun was shining beautifully yesterday and the walk was a delight. There are only a few of those type of locks and it is still very impressive to see up close.
      Have a good week yourself.

  8. I just love how green everything is there! I live in a more desert place. And it gets really cold in the winters so I just haven't been out much recently. I got a new cabinet painting in my kitchen not too long ago so that's been a fun thing to distract me until summer gets here. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hello Renee. Thank you for visiting. I hope it starts to warm up soon for you so that you can enjoy the outdoors. Having a paint makeover on your kitchen cabinets to refresh them is a great idea and you can enjoy that until the weather warms up a bit more for you. Happy April to you.

    1. Thank you Sal. We will be able to compare notes on our respective ponds as the year progresses. I haven't seen Canal Boat Diaries, so I will be looking that up to enjoy. The weather is looking good for a while so we can both get out and enjoy our Spring gardens. Happy April days to you.
