A Day Out In the Sunshine

Hello everyone. I hope you all had a good week.

It has been another very dry week here in this small corner. However, as I type today's blog post, that is changing, and I can hear the much-needed rain pattering lightly on our conservatory roof. Much to the annoyance of D, who is on a half-term break from school, it looks like a wet week ahead. I'm sure we will find some fun things to do together, though.

On Friday, hubby had a day off work, and as the sun was shining, we headed out on a National Trust day, visiting two places we had enjoyed before.

First of all, we stopped at Croft Castle near Leominster, Herefordshire.

The Croft family, who lived at the castle, owned it for much of the last 1000 years, with about 170 years where it was in other hands due to unforeseen financial problems. Today, it has a Gothic revival style inside with some Georgian influences. On the outside, Croft still retains the feel of a Medieval castle, which I really like. The views over the Herefordshire countryside are also stunning.

This gramophone was a beautiful piece of furniture and would have been enjoyed by some Croft family members in the early twentieth century.

Dining for 8 today!

The amazing ceiling rose can be seen from the staircase along with the other Gothic features of cornices, friezes and wall arches.

The Church of St Michael and All Angels sits almost on the doorstep of the current Croft castle and predates it by several centuries.

The bell tower is constructed of Welsh slate.

Inside, the church is quite simply arranged with a beautiful stained glass window and a memorial monument to the earliest recorded Croft - Sir Richard (1509) and his wife Eleanor (1529).

Many of you know how much I enjoy being in my own garden, and the walled garden at Croft was an absolute delight to explore.

These were some of my favourite blooms in May.

There were so many figs growing against this warm wall.

After a cuppa and a piece of cake, we drove on to Berrington Hall, which is also in Leominster.

From the outside the Hall looks quite severe ,so it is quite a surprise to see the interior decorative features. It was built during the Georgian period for Thomas Harley a London banker and government contractor who wished to retire to the country. The hall was designed by Henry Holland and the parkland developed by Capability Brown

This is very much a building in the Georgian era.

Inside is a very grand staircase and when you look up, you can see the domed glass ceiling letting in the light from above.

Many of the ceilings have beautiful and intricate plasterwork and painted insets. This one is in the dining room.

Since we last visited, there is a new display of costumes from the Georgian period and this dress was particularly stunning.

You would definitely have needed to turn sideways to get through a doorway!

On a smaller scale, these were some children's clothes.

Tea time and some embroidery.

Breakfast in bed.

A simple family meal.

Lots of beautiful ceilings and plasterwork.

We had a really wonderful day looking inside these two very different homes and enjoying their gardens in the sunshine. With NT membership, it was light on the wallet, too.😏

D tells me she wants us to go 'Mum and Daughter' shopping this week, which we both enjoy. Maybe we can squeeze in a nice cuppa and a piece of cake while we are out. As for the bank holiday on Monday, all three of us would like to spend a few hours in Hereford, but that will depend on the weather.

Do you have plans for next week? D and I hope you have some fun things to do and that you have a happy week.

B and D x

  1. It's wet here, but I am not complaining, it can rain for days, filling our water buts. We avoid going out on Bank Holidays, here along the south coast the traffic will be bumper to bumper, a neighbour is having a BBQ this afternoon, if it stops raining.

    1. We have rain due for several days this week but that's ok for the same reasons you give, Marlene. I can imagine it will be busy where you live tomorrow especially if the weather is better than here. Hopefully you will still enjoy the day doing what makes you happy. Have a good week.

    1. You would love the walled garden at Croft, Chris. We intend to go back at different times of the year just to see what is in flower. Have a good week whatever your plans are.

  3. What a glorious day out!! I love the costumes. I can't decide which looks better, a dining table set for a meal, or one of those ones the NT often do, with fake fruit, bread, meats etc on the table...

    1. The costumes were beautiful but there were so many layers of clothes to put on and they must have been heavy to wear. As for the wigs!!
Sometimes the fake foods can be quite realistic and give a better idea of what might have been eaten at that time.
We had a wonderful time though and the sun shone all day.

  4. Lovely houses and gardens to visit. It's a shame the forecast is a little disappointing for half-term, but it's always nice to have time to oneself.

    1. Both houses and gardens were lovely and for me seemed even better than the last time we visited even if that was twenty years ago.
We are off to Hereford Cathedral and The Mappa Mundi tomorrow, so something for us to look forward to whatever the weather. The rest of the week we will take one day at a time. D and I enjoy each others company and will find something to keep us out of mischief!

  5. Croft Castle is beautiful, but it's the walled garden that catches my eye the most. It's stunning.
Enjoy your shopping and cake. Xx

    1. I really loved the walled garden at Croft and want to see it again at different times of the year. I could have spent a long time wandering around and enjoying the plants. Some people had even bought their own seats so they could enjoy the space for longer.
I'm looking forward to a 'girlie' day with D.
      Have a great week yourself.

  6. How wonderful. Both of these NT places are on my 'must visit' list but we haven't managed to get there yet. Both of them look interesting in different ways. I love the costumes at Berrington and the gardens at Croft, your photos are lovely:)

    1. You would love the gardens at Croft Castle, Rosie. There was also a room of Georgian costumes that you could try on at Berrington Hall, which was a lot of fun too. Thank you for you kind photo comment and I hope you get to visit these two lovely NT buildings soon.

  8. What a wonderful day out you enjoyed visiting two very interesting places.
I enjoyed seeing your photographs of the houses and beautiful garden.

That dress looks stunning, but yes, I think you would need to turn sideways to get through a doorway!

    Have a lovely week ahead.

    All the best Jan

Can you imagine how long it would have taken to get ready just for a normal day with all those layers of clothes and not just the women either.
Have a lovely week yourself, Jan.

    1. We do like to try and get out to visit these special places whenever we can. Hubby retires in the next few months so we will be able to go out even more. The dresses are all very beautiful with all the details and embroidery but it must have been hard work moving around in one of them all day.
We had a few heavy showers over the last few days but the next weekend looks like it will be full on sunshine again. Enjoy the rest of your week.

  10. What a lovely blog post …very interesting! I would love to visit the walled garden at Croft!
I really enjoyed our trip to Herefordshire, which was quite a few years ago; it’s a lovely part of the U.K.I think. Enjoy the weekend! Sal 😁

    1. The walled garden was lovely to wander around at Croft and the Irises were stunning. I don't really grow them in my garden at the moment apart from the one in the pond. If I can find a spot where they can bake in the sun I really should give them a try.
We timed Hereford well as it was dry in the morning when we visited the cathedral. We will be going back again, as there are lots of places to visit in the area.
Have a good weekend whatever your plans are.

  11. What a lovely day out! These old places always have the most fascinating history, and I enjoyed seeing it all here, including the gardens. I know without a doubt you are going to enjoy mom daughter shopping trip. Sounds a real treat! We have just had a week of heavy rain and looks like it will be raining again later on. I hope your much needed rain is enough and not too much. We have had flood warnings around here. Like you, we always find fun things to do even in such weather. Thank you for sharing all these super photos in your post. Fascinating to see!

    1. Hi Denise. Thank you for visiting. D and I had a great day shopping and bought a few things for our holiday in August. We really haven't had as much rain as I thought and we are fortunate that we live in an area that is not prone to heavy flooding so that is good. Glad you enjoyed the photos of Croft and Berrington.
