Hello everyone.
After half-term week, this week has been much quieter, giving me the chance to catch my breath and fill you in on a few of the other things we did during the holiday, as promised.
First, we visited Hereford Cathedral. This cathedral has been a place of worship since at least the eighth century, although large parts of it were rebuilt in the Norman period. Gothic styles have also influenced it. In the crypt of the cathedral is the chained library, which has ancient books and manuscripts chained to the bookshelves. They are handwritten and contain beautiful illustrations.
One of the other most valuable treasures of the cathedral is the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world dating from the late thirteenth century. It is, however, not a map in the modern sense but rather a summary of the worldview at that time—a pictorial encyclopedia and map of the medieval mind.
Although I didn't take pictures of either of these important artefacts, I hope you enjoy the variety of stained glass windows in the main cathedral.
One of the other lovely things about half-term school holidays is that D often likes to bake. Here is her half-term cake that she made this time. It was delicious and super chocolatey!
D and I also went shopping together and came back after a lovely few hours, with several shopping bags of items for our holiday together in August. We are cruising around the coasts of France, Italy, Spain and Corsica. I am really looking forward to the trip.
Back in my garden this week, I'd like to introduce you to my newest baby hosta. It is tiny compared to the ones at Barnsdale Gardens but holds a lot of promise, according to the plant label. I noticed a leaf in the photo with a rather large hole, and after checking the health of the rest of the hostas, I can report that they are all fine. Someone must have munched on it before I planted it.
The foxgloves are all doing well and the bees are simply loving them.
And this Iris was a beautiful surprise when it opened up during the week. It has had several flowers already and seems to have settled well in the clear water of our new pond.
The Rodgersia has also grown tall and lush in the merry-go-round of sun and rain this year, too.
It's an excellent year for strawberries, and I've already seen many delicious ones while visiting other blogs recently. I replanted my plants earlier in the year and added a couple of new ones from the rampant runners that had grown. This is D's hand so that you can see how enormous the strawberries have grown.
Meanwhile, there is another quiet week ahead for this small corner, but sometimes, that is a very good week indeed.
I hope that whether your week is busy or relaxed, it is a good one wherever you are in the world.
Take care
B x
The cathedral is lovely. I love the architecture and stained glass. The cake looks delicious. The flowers are gorgeous and the strawberries 🍓 are amazing.
ReplyDeleteYou are very kind with all you lovely comments. I really appreciate your visit. I am really happy with my strawberries this year, I don't think I have seen them this big before. The cake is something we always enjoy when D has been baking. She makes some wonderful cakes, cookies and savouries. I think my favourite flower is the Iris because it was a beautiful surprise. Hope you have a great week.
DeleteIt's a brilliant year for strawberries, and they keep coming, your garden is full of colour. That cake looks amazing, it's great to have a treat at coffee time, we have cider apple cake this week, I'm not the baker in our house, hubby is.
ReplyDeleteCider apple cake sounds delicious. I wonder if D might oblige.🤔 I do enjoy baking but D enjoys it more. The chocolate cake was delicious. As you can imagine, it didn't last long! It is lovely to be able to enjoy our gardens and see what is growing and in flower each day. I hope you are able to spend time outside today in your garden.
DeleteThe stained glass is beautiful, especially the rich green and red. Your strawberries are amazing. Ours are nowhere near ripening and certainly not as big!
ReplyDeleteI'm craving rich chocolate cake now . . .
I was surprised at the different styles of stained glass in the windows. The red and green one is fairly new and shows how modern stained glass can be just as beautiful as the ancient. Sorry about the bringer of a chocolate craving but it did taste good. Strawberries are still ripening and we look forward to fresh fruit most evenings for now. Enjoy your week.
DeleteOh my! That cake looks super chocolatey, and it must have tasted delicious.
ReplyDeleteI imagine you'll be getting very excited for your holiday - it wll come round faster than you think. Xx
Yes, the cake was super drenched in chocolate and was delicious. Strange, I couldn't detect any calories - I wish! It is the first time D and I will have been away together, just the two of us so we are both really looking forward to August. The time is ticking away fast now. Have a lovely week, Jules x
DeleteLoving those beautiful windows. Oh I bet you’re getting very excited about your holiday. It sounds like it will be wonderful. B x
ReplyDeleteThe windows were beautiful and all very different to each other. I love stained glass.
DeleteOnly 9 weeks until our holiday. We are going to have such a good time. 😊
Sounds a lovely visit to Hereford Cathedral, those stained glass windows are so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThat cake looks so delicious and chocolatey.
Very nice pictures from the garden and what lovely size strawberries they are.
Have a good week ahead.
All the best Jan
The stained glass windows were stunning at the cathedral, especially when the sun was shining through them.
DeleteDelicious cake and of course full of zero calories!
Glad you enjoyed seeing the lates garden flowers and of course the strawberries.
Hope you see some sunshine this week x
Hereford Cathedral is wonderful, your photos of the stained glass are lovely. The cake looks good, I can image a slice on a plate with a couple of your strawberries on the side. We have loads of strawberries this year, we've given lots aways to neighbours and still they keep appearing:)
ReplyDeleteIt really has been a bumper year for strawberries hasn't it. Chocolate and strawberries always go well together, so would have been perfect with D's cake.
DeleteHereford Cathedral is quite special both in the architecture and the stained glass windows. It is also quite unique because of the Mappa Mundi and the Chained Library. Glad you enjoyed the photos. Have a great week.
Your holiday sounds exciting, wonderful strawberries
ReplyDeleteThank you,Chris. D and I are really looking forward to our mother and daughter holiday. daughter. We really do get on well and have similar tastes. Strawberries have been very good this year. Best year for a long time.
DeleteHope you have a good week x
Looks like a great week! I have never heard of the Mappa Mundi, that's incredible! The cathedral is impressive as it is beautiful and the stained-glass windows are stunning. Oh D, what a very yummy cake that is!!! Please send over a slice ;) I wish! It made me smile thinking about the two of you going on the shopping trip. It sounds like a great holiday you are going on. It was also fun to see the rest of your garden with all those pretty plants and flowers, and those strawberries are huge! Thank you so much, always a pleasure to visit.
ReplyDeleteMappa Mundi is facinating and has so much detail about how life was seen by the Medieval mind. It is a wonderful manuscript. We would so love to share D's cake with you but it might not survive the journey. The shopping trip was fun with D, we are similar in so many ways and love to spend time together. I can't wait for the holiday. I'm happy that you enjoyed seeing more of the garden this week.
DeleteThank you for your kind words, Denise. Always good to hear from you, dear friend x
The cathedral looks impressive and I do love to see all the stained glass, my favourite part of a visit to any church. Oh wow, that chocolate cake looks delicious, those home grown strawberries would go very well with that. Nice to see the plants doing well in the garden, I think the good weather we got early this year has been a bonus, everywhere seems so lush and colourful, though the climbing beans that Mick planted haven't done so well, hardly any germination, I think he needs to try again.
ReplyDeleteHello Jo. I'm not having much luck with peas this year either. Strange how some crops do better in some years and not in others. It has definitely been the year of the strawberrry and blackcurrant in my garden.
DeleteI'll let D know you like her cake, she is having a rough day and that will cheer her up. Stained glass is one of my favourite things to see in buildings and they can be so different. Hereford Cathedral was a lovely place to visit and enjoy all it has to offer.
Have a good week.
Oh my goodness that stained glass is beautiful. It's a great year for strawberries isn't it. Mine have never been this big before. I'd enjoy a slice of that chocolate cake.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Cherie. The stained glass is wonderful isn't it. I agree it is probably the best year I have had for strawberries too. We are enjoying some every day at the moment. Anything D bakes doesn't last long here and the chocolate cake was yummy. Have a fabulous sunny weekend.
DeleteOh your trip in August sounds wonderful - I know you must be very excited about it. As excited as you were (I'm sure) to share in that half-term chocolate cake!!:) WOW
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to all the new places I shall be visiting this year. I will have lots to report back on. D's cakes are always amazing but never last very long in this house, unfortunately. No cake here at the moment - time for some more baking I think. 😊
DeletePretty windows, a bake, flowers and berries. You've got it all here. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad there were lots of things that you enjoyed here today.
DeleteWe visited Hereford a couple of times when we stopped off on our way to Shropshire. I particularly wanted to see The Mappa Mundi, being a bit of a history lover!
ReplyDeleteLike you, we’ve planted Hostas and although they’ve been nibbled a little, they are doing well. I’ve surrounded them with grit which I think has helped. But I’m battling slugs and snails elsewhere in the garden and greenhouse!
Grit does seem to work well to deter slugs. I've also used the copper bands but my best friends are the frogs.
DeleteI'm glad you got to see the Mappa Mundi and the chained library when you were in Hereford. Both D and I love history too.
