Last week a bud, This Week a Flower

Hello everyone.

January has come to an end, and a new month has just begun. For much of last month, the weather was dull and wet, but some things still made me smile.

I showed you my Amaryllis last week. A vey small bulb that seemed to hold little in the way of beautiful blooms. I waited and waited and then suddenly, almost overnight two buds appeared. Now the buds have opened to reveal these amazing flowers.

The outside of each flower petal look as though it has been shaded and painted by hand with all those markings; it is so pretty. The reverse side of the petals is a peachy orange with streaks of pink. It has turned out to be quite a stunnung plant and worth the wait. It would be lovely if I could get it to flower again next year.

It was also a week for catching up with family and friends—time to enjoy time together over coffee, cake and meals.

On Saturday, my niece and her family joined us for the evening, and after we had eaten, we played this game. While Monopoly (The Original version) is familiar to some of you, you may not be aware of this one.

The game was not a British invention; it originated in the United States and is based on a 1904 patented game by Elizabeth Magie. A UK version was later licensed by Waddingtons. This is the London version, most recognised as the game we either love or hate!

There are now many versions of the game, some based on towns and cities and some based on other concepts. The version we played on Saturday involved hidden keys and money in a coded vault. Guess the correct code, and everything in the vault is yours!

That wasn't the only mystery we had while playing the game. Somehow, D kept moving around the board without landing on any of the properties. In the end, I don't think she landed on any property the entire game. It was truly bizarre and left us all a bit flabbergasted. We are still not sure how she managed this amazing feat!

It was a good game, and there was much laughter—a great evening spent with family.

As the days begin to lengthen and Spring grows ever closer, here's to the new month of February. I hope we all find things to make us smile and bring us joy. Have a lovely week, everyone.

    1. Time spent with family, lots of laughter and a beautiful amaryllis - what more could I ask for😊. Most days are drizzly at the moment so I am making the most of those windows of opportunity. Have a good week.

    1. We only have the original version and our niece brought the 'vault' one over when they visited. They have a number of versions which all look interesting to try. Peppa pig sounds a fun one for the younger children.

    1. It is a wonderful colour. I think it has been a Cinderella rags to a princess kind of flower. I just love it.

  5. I was so excited to see your beautiful amaryllis!! I was gifted one at Christmas and the bloom is just (barely) beginning to open. This is the first time I have enjoyed one of these flowers and I am just mystified! How does it bloom (and thrive) without water and zero attention from me?! It is amazing. I hope mine is as lovely as yours - and I think it will be!! Glad you had a fun evening. Games are a great way to spend these winter nights!! Have a wonderful week!!

    1. I am glad to hear that you are enjoying your amaryllis as much as I am mine. It was such a fun evening with my niece and family. Jacket potatoes for tea and then games and plenty of laughter. Enjoy your week, Jennifer.

  6. The main thing with the amaryllis is to cut the flower head off once it's going over then allow the leaves to die back naturally, don't cut the back, just like other bulbs they get their strength through the leaves.

    1. Thank you for the advice, Marlene. I will give it a try for next year. One of the reasons I love the blogging world is that people can be so supportive passing on their knowledge and experiences to others. Have a lovely week and I hope you and Lilly are able to get outside for a while.

    1. Happy February to you too, Denise. I hope all that snow and bad weather you have been having disappears very soon and that it won't then cause more problems with flooding. The amaryllis is really making me smile and I shall be growing more next year. They brighten any room with their lovely colours.

  8. Your amaryllis is beautiful, mine this year is a similar colour, though I've never got mine to flower a second year, I've given up now. We're big fans of board games, we have so much fun playing various things but I haven't come across this particular version of Monopoly before.

    1. They are beautiful plants and I would love to get them to flower again. I'm going to keep trying until I get a success. I had not heard of this Monopoly version before but it was great fun. Actually I didn't realise there were quite so many versions of the game.

  9. Your Amaryllis is a lovely cheerful colour. You brought back memories of gatherings of family or friends and loads of laughter whilst playing cards or board games, usually Cluedo but sometimes Monopoly:)

    1. Cluedo is another good family board game. It appears that that too has a number of more modern versions to enjoy, based on the original theme.

  10. Beautiful flower - well worth waiting for. I used to hate Monopoly when I was a child, but it's fun to play as adults.

    1. We rarely played Monopoly when I was a child but it was a lot of fun playing it again at the weekend. We did set some rules about when to end the game which helped. The different version also kept things interesting.

I don't know that version of Monopoly, but it sounds like you had a really fun time with the family.

Happy February wishes, have a good week.

  12. Hello and Happy February! We've had such cold, snowy, and gray weather over the past month that I'm hoping February brings warmer, brighter days. I'm missing the sunshine! Your amaryllis is gorgeous! I bought a potted daffodil plant two weeks ago, and it's still blooming and bringing me lots of joy. Have a great week!

  13. Hello Julia. I hope February is starting well for you too. I think we are all looking for a little sunshine and a lot less gloomy wet weather. I can't wait for Spring to arrive. Your daffodils sound bright and cheery for you to enjoy. I hope you have many other things to make you smile this month.

    1. It was the first time I had seen the game too. It was good to be play with the family. Isn't the weather horrid at the moment- so damp and miserable. Let's hope for a more positive change as Spring inches ever closer.

  15. Beautiful Amaryllis they are certainly a spectacular flower. I first saw one in 1972 in some one's house, never saw one before then, I wonder where they came from.

    1. Spectacular is a great word to describe the amaryllis that we see in our homes. I checked and found amaryllis hippeastrum comes from South and central America - Peru, Brazil. The amaryllis belladonna however comes from South Africa.

  16. Your Amaryllis sounds absolutely stunning, nature really does have a way of surprising us! Do you think it will bloom again next year, or is this a one-time miracle? I appreciate how you combine the beauty of flowers with the enjoyment of family game nights. How did D manage to navigate the board in such a way without landing on any properties? That sounds hilarious! I hope your weekend is filled with laughter, flowers, and cozy moments. Visit www.melodyjacob.com to view my latest travel post.

    1. Thank you Melody. I am hoping that the amaryllis will flower again next year. It certainly is possible. We laughed so much during that game. We still have no idea how D managed to get round the board the entire time, without landing on the properties. It will probably never happen again. A very memorable evening.
I shall be checking out your post on Muirshiel Country Park. It sounds like you had fun.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  17. It reminds me of Clue and how many versions of that went on the market over the years. Wow, that she never landed on a property. I haven't played or if I did maybe once or twice so I don't know the details of the game. I do know the saying, go straight to jail and do no pass go. That's become a saying that I hear from the game. Wishing you a great weekend. I've been away from Blogger, decluttering. Sooo nice. Dropped more bags off yesterday. Happy Weekend! Cheers, Ivy.

    1. We still have no idea how she managed to not land on any properties during that game. It was hillarious! We have one version of Clue(do) but I am sure there must be loads of versions of that game too. Well done with the decluttering and lovely to hear from you, Ivy. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
