Trying Something New

Hello everyone.

D here again!

The craft below is something I have been meaning to try for several years.

A couple of years ago, I went to a craft show with Mum and discovered the art of marbling. I was keen to do it myself and bought a starter kit. However, it has languished in a cupboard for six years.

This Easter holiday, I finally got around to rediscovering it and finally having a play. Setting everything up took a few days, but it was ultimately worth it. I am so pleased with my first attempts and will be doing some more.

I'm thinking of cutting these up to use as greeting card toppers. What do you think?

And now a quick hello from Beverley.

I started the week by planting six loofah seeds in pots and placing them in the conservatory to germinate. Within a few days, they were all poking their heads above the soil, eager to get growing. I have grown these vines for a couple years but have yet to successfully grow the loofah.

They are vine plants, so I plan to grow them in my new greenhouse this year.

Wish me luck, and I will keep you posted.

We both wish you all a pleasant week ahead with some sunny spells!!!

  1. I remember marbling at school - it was great fun and the results are amazing. Of course, I'm sure there are many sophisticated ways to do it, now. I think yours look beautiful and would make lovely cards.
I'm intrigued by the loofah seedlings. Do the plants grow enormous?

  2. Thank you I had a lot of fun doing this and am looking forward to more marbling craft play.

The loofahs take a long season to grow and they get very big. The flowers are a beautiful yellow colour. I might need to repot them because when I just checked two already have roots through the bottom of the pot. Triffid style :-)

  3. What lovely effects the marbling gives. I grew loofahs many years ago and could only fit two in my greenhouse! I still have one of the original loofahs.

    1. The marbling is lovely and so individual as no two pieces will be the same. The loofahs have started very well and it would be good to see at least one produce the gourd fruit and loofah. Maybe this will be the year. I think two would be enough to mature in my greenhouse too.

  4. I've always loved marbling. In the Good Old Days, when the children made their own topic books, the covers were often marbled and they looked amazing.

Fingers crossed for those seeds, Beverley. xx

  5. LOVE all the fun colors and think cards would be great. Have fun with them. I don't do well with indoor plants, but ok with outdoor....but you're starting from seeds, something I'm no good at so am sending you lots of luck and look forward to an update in your next blog post.

    1. I will get D to post her cards when she makes them, so you can see.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how this years loofah seeds grow. I grow quite a lot of plants from seed but I struggle with house plants. I suppose we all have our strengths and weaknesses but I love the challenge. Have a great week.

Gardeners World has a good guide to growing this plant, which you may already be aware of it.

At the moment the loofah are romping away so they will soon be ready for repotting again.

  9. That does give such a lovely effect, I love how all the colours blend together giving different designs. I think they'll look fabulous on a card. It's always exciting at this time of year seeing new seedlings emerge. Good luck with the loofahs, fingers crossed that you get an actual loofah this year.

    1. Hopefully D will get a few cards done this week. I suggested that she leaves any greeting off the front for now and then adds an appropriate one when needed. A full size loofah would be fun wouldn't it :_)

  14. I remember doing marbling, years ago, at school. It was a lot of fun, if a little messy - or maybe that was just me :)
I will watch your loofah growing with interest. It's exciting trying to grow something a little different. I'm still hoping I might get some lemons in the next couple of years. X
