Hello to you all. I hope you have had a lovely week.
In this small corner, there has been the odd respite from the heat, but only for a short time. I am very glad we bought the parasol when we did because sitting under the shade it gives has been wonderful.
We have still managed to have some meals outside, especially first thing or for our evening meal. This week we had our new table arrive, which will mean that we can eat outside even more. We only bought two chairs as it was a mix and match with the furniture. We loved the table, which is a perfect size for us, but not the seating, which was benches. I need a chair with a back. The chairs we liked had backs and arms, but we weren't sure how they would fit under the table. Now we know it works; we can buy the rest of the chairs.
Back now to a very sunny Derbyshire, to share the rest of our few days away with you.
I have wanted to visit Bolsover Castle for some time, and our short break presented the ideal opportunity. The Peverel family built the original castle, but during the Medieval period it fell into disrepair. Over several years, the property exchanged hands until the ruins were sold to Sir Charles Cavendish, who wanted to build a new castle. It was not built for defensive purposes but for elegance and high society living. One of his sons, William, was a fine horseman and horse breeder. He was also an expert in manège, a form of dressage. The tower that was built as part of renovations became known as 'The Little Castle'. My favourite room in the tower was the Star Chamber, which has tiny lead stars on the blue ceiling. Charles I and Henrietta Maria visited Bolsover in 1634 to be entertained.
Our tour guide was excellent, and he explained lots of the details. The only downside was that it lasted for over an hour and a half!!
While we were in the area, we also visited Buxton and Matlock to see their well dressing displays. I have seen some wonderful examples of these on some other friends' blogs, so it was great to see some for ourselves.
Well dressing is an old English tradition in Derbyshire and the Peak District, where local communities decorate wells and springs with beautiful hand-crafted pieces of art made from petals, leaves, seed heads and other natural materials. The designs are set in large boards of soft clay. Tradition suggests that it is a way of giving thanks for the fresh water supply from surrounding springs.
Arkwright chose Cromford for his mill because of the year round water supply needed to power his machinery. He aso built housing and developed the village for his employees to support maximum production.
After spending time looking at some of the restored buildings and machinery, we took a brief walk to St Mary's church where Richard and other members of the family are buried.
The garden was looking very sad and droopy when we got home, but it is looking much better now, at least in some places. I have been waiting and waiting for these lilies to flower, and now they are producing flowers every day. The variety is called 'Stargazer ', and it is just that. I shall be buying other varieties to add to them for next year. I think they are stunning. Also, the first sunflowers are blooming, and the bees are loving them.
The weather will be hot again next week, but there may be a chance of a shower. However, even though it is uncomfortable to be outside here, I am thinking of all those who are particularly suffering with the heat and wildfires and all the dangers they bring. I pray that you will be safe.
Take care, everyone.

I've never heard of well dressing before. These are some beautiful displays.
ReplyDeleteYour new table looks lovely. It's so nice being able to eat outdoors just now. Xx
I think the displays start from about May until September. Many villages take part in the Well Dressing and each one is different. We were lucky to have visited Derbyshire at this time. It was also fun hunting down where each one was located.
DeleteI'm so pleased with the table and I know it wil encourage us to eat outside more often.
Enjoy the week ahead, Jules. I hope you feeling better these days.
Lovely to see the well dressings, we haven't visited any this year. If you ever get the chance to go to Tissington you would love that. The village puts on a wonderful well dressing festival. I haven't visited Bolsover Castle, the history sounds interesting though I'm sure the tour could have been condensed a little, haha. I enjoy looking round the shops at Cromford Mill, especially the cheese shop! Enjoy your new outdoor seating, I hear another heatwave is on the way.
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed seeing some of the well dressings while we were away. They are all so different and I know they must have taken many hours of work to complete them. Thank you for suggesting Tissington. I will look forward to visiting there another time.
DeleteThe tour at Bolsover was good and it was a small group but I do find standing for a long time difficult.
We are enjoying using the new table. It is just what we were looking for. Strangeley, we are having a few showers today but it will be back to more heat later in the week.
The well dressings were amazing, with astonishing detail.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been lovely to get home again and put your smart new table to good use under your parasol. Bliss!
Sorry, Janice. I thought I had posted back to you. Clearly not!!
DeleteThe well dressing artworks are amazing and so detailed. I didn't realise how many of them there are each year and each one different. Today is cooler and refreshing but when the sun comes out, a drink in the shade is delightful.
Enjoy your week.
These places are always fascinating and beautiful! That's a beautiful outside table set, perfect to enjoy a meal or just a cold drink, or read for a while. You must be very pleased with it. Loving care always makes itself known and your flowers are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI am so pleased with how the lily is flowering after waiting so long for it to bloom. This morning there were seven blooms all giving out a sweet scent. It took us a while to find the right furniture for outside but we love our table and it will encourage us to eat outside more often. Work is still in progress outside but I'm happy with that.
DeleteHave a good week.
Beautiful well dressings. Lovely photos. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure, Linda. Glad you liked the well dressings in Derbyshire.
DeleteHave a good week.
Oh wow, those well dressings are stunning. Your stargazer lillies will smell divine
ReplyDeleteI am in love with my lilies. They are so beautiful. I wish I had grown them before.
DeleteIt was the first time I had seen well dressing designs for myself and you are right they are amazing and with such detail. There are new designs appearing throughout August and part of September in various parts of Derbyshire. Next year we might try hunting down a few more of them.
Have a good week, Cherie.
Your garden lilies and sunflowers are beautiful and your new table and chairs will be much used I'm sure. You visited some of my favourite places whilst in Derbyshire. Cromford, the mills and canal are always a favourite destination:)
ReplyDeleteWe had such a lovely time visiting Derbyshire, even if it was only a tiny snippet. We will definitely be back again as soon as we can.
DeleteThe bees are loving both the lilies and the sunflowers too. Yesterday I planted out some lavender and the bees will love that too. It is good to be able to provide suitable flowers for them. I was mesmerised by their busy activity this morning.
Oh wow...look at those flowers! They are beautiful. The sunflowers would just make me so happy every time I stepped outside into the garden!! So nice to get away...but isn't it lovely to be back in your own small corner? I love that! Thanks for sharing all the photos!!
ReplyDeleteThe flowers make me smile every time I go out in the garden. Watching the bees round the sunflowers is something money can't buy.
DeleteAs Dorothy said, "There is no place like home" 😊
Have a lovely week, Jennifer.
I am so glad you explained well dressing! Because at first read I thought of garments and what to wear or not... silly me. The wells look fantastic. Glad you like your chairs. I am with you, I much prefer a chair with a back over a bench.
ReplyDeleteHa ha that made me laugh too, Christina. I'm glad that a little explanation cleared things up for you.
DeleteThe chairs are getting well used at the moment and hopefully it won't be long before they are joined by two more to complete the set.
I first came across well dressing a few years back when family members sent me pictures ...
ReplyDeleteI did enjoy seeing your photographs of well dressing and also your other photographs from your break away.
Your flowers are pretty and lovely to see the sunflowers and their visitors :)
I hope your week is going well, our temperatures are still too high for me
All the best Jan
Thank you for your kind comments, Jan. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the photos.
ReplyDeleteThe lilies now has about 15 blooms and are stunning. I'm really glad I planted them because they have been worth the wait. The sunflowers have also continued to make me smile with their bright yellow flowers and all the bee activity. Simple things are giving me a lot of pleasure.
We actually had some rain yesterday which was welcome and the weather is starting to cool by a few degrees. Hope it is starting to feel better where you are too.
Sounds like you had the perfect short break. I need to plan a break for me and my husband soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Katie. I hope you find somewhere lovely for a short break holiday.
